For those that are unfamiliar with New York Fashion Week, it can be defined as a “big deal”. Fashion designers are given the opportunity to debut their newest collections to the public, it has a positive impact on the economy, and some of the most popular celebrities make their appearance. Some of the most notable stars in attendance this year were Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, and the infamous Kanye West. While some of the guests were content with taking selfies and watching the models walk the runway, Kanye had a different agenda- one that caused a bit of controversy.
During the 12 p.m. time slot on September 16th, fashion designer Anne Bowen was scheduled to launch her newest streetwear collection. However, Kanye decided that he would use that time slot to present his new line of footwear. Naturally, Bowen was upset, and explained that her team had been “prepping for a year for this at considerable financial, labor- and commitment-cost to our company. Our show date has been scheduled for months and has been on the Fashion Calendar for weeks. We went through all the proper channels to make this a reality.” Bowen was forced to move her show to a different day, and as a result, a large amount of guests were unable to attend. While many guests were probably enthusiastic about Kanye’s new line, there is no denying it was an unprofessional move. Bowen and her team suffered financially due to Kanye’s decision, and Bowen’s line did not get the attention that it deserved due to the last minute switch.
Aside from upsetting designers, Kanye continued to cause issues at the show. Kanye asked models at the event to sign an agreement that they would not discuss him (or his family) during the show, or else he would sue them for $10 million. Not only is this an absurd amount of money, but it also denies people their freedom of speech. Kanye’s agreement causes a huge issue because it has the potential to hurt future Fashion Weeks. If models know that he will be attending shows, this may prevent them from attending because they do not want to feel threatened by him. Although there were a number of models that refused to sign the agreement, it is still troubling to know that there is a man that believes he can control the thoughts and opinions of others.
What is most frustrating about Kanye’s behavior is that the entertainment industry allows him to act this way. Over the years, Kanye has been known to cross the line with his behavior. He’s interrupted award show speeches, compared himself to Jesus, and now he has pulled these stunts at Fashion Week. Despite all of these controversies, he is still allowed to present at shows and attend events. The media dismisses his actions and justifies his behavior as “Kanye just being Kanye”, but why? His antics may make for great news, but his unprofessionalism is causing other people, like the designers and models at Fashion Week to suffer. Those who were in charge of Fashion Week knew what he was doing, yet they allowed him to interfere with another designer’s plans. While Kanye is banning people from talking about him, maybe shows should just ban Kanye.
