ELECTOR VOTE DECEMBER 19, 2016
- Uniting Forces
First and foremost, those dismayed by the November 8, 2016 election are urged to come together. Lack of cohesiveness among voters, particularly democrats, particularly women is already glaring. All genders, colors, sexual orientations, nationalities, etc., are encouraged to embrace intersectionality.

- Electoral College and the Elector Vote on Monday, December 19
While there is a movement to abolish the Electoral College, for now it is time sensitive for us to avail ourselves of what is called Faithless Elector. Most of us know that Donald Trump won the election with 306 Electoral College votes, 36 more than the 270 needed to win. However, some do not know that Hillary Clinton won the Popular Vote by 2.8 million, the largest margin of victory in history. This election is only the fourth in history where the Electoral winner did not also win the popular vote. Out of 538 electors, only 37 pledged to Trump need to change their pledge to turn the election as “faithless electors” or, some would argue, faithful ones.
Many of you may not know that the electors of the Electoral College do not actually cast votes until December 19, 2016. Trump is not legally “president elect” unless and until he is voted in by the electors on that date. Elector votes are collectively pledged on Election Day each year, but per the Electoral College and Constitution, there is a five-week waiting period for them to cast their individual votes, a time period designed to prevent a demagogue from becoming president. Some states fine electors if they change their pledge, but the fine is relatively low at approximately $1,000. Some states and/or electors are currently suing to unbind from their state’s election result. In other states it is not against the law or fined if an elector changes their pledge. A few attorneys are offering free services to any elector having problems with changing their pledge.
It is urged that electors not vote for Trump unless and until investigations ensue regarding Trump’s tax returns, his being under the influence of foreign powers, interference of reported Russian hacking, possible voter fraud, and electronic miscalculations, and other factors which do or may render his election unconstitutional. If electors are unable to conclude their deliberations on December 19, they should be able to deliberate as long as they reasonably need to make their choice.
Which raises the question, are the electors being urged to vote for Hillary Clinton? Yes, the movement is urging electors to vote with their conscience, honor the popular vote, stopping Trump and electing Hillary who is next in line to win via Electoral College.
There are myriad petitions circulating, but any petition completed by reaching its signature goal can be used influentially in the media particularly to reach key players such as electors. The following CREDO petition was chosen due to the phrasing and requirements being closest to the goals of the Women and Allies movement. Once signed it will be sent to all electors in a timely manner as well as the Senate and White House. Short link: goo.gl/5hHGSE
